Bjork: Raise your flag? Declare independence? "Tibet...Tibet"

Iceland's avant-garde art-rock songstress, Bjork, performed to a sold-out crowd last night at the Shanghai International Gymnastic Center; her first-ever show in Shanghai – she performed once before in Beijing, circa 1996.

Never ceasing to draw attention, Bjork closed the show with a 2nd encore performance of "Declare Independence" – a rousing power-to-the people anthem containing such lyrics as: "Declare independence!" "Don't let them do that to you!" "Start your own currency!" "Make your own stamp" "Protect your language" "Make your own flag!" "Raise your flag!"...etc. [lyrics]

You can imagine where this might be going.

At the end of the song, just before walking off stage, Bjork left the crowd with two words: "Tibet.....Tibet"......fully audible, in English.

"Declare Independence" was originally written with the Faroe Islands and Greenland in mind, not Tibet.

Your correspondent hasn't been able to find a reliable video clip of this yet; however, I can attest to it happening because I was there.

As expected, online Chinese discussion boards (i.e. Douban, Tianya) are ripe with commentary with some saying "who cares" and showing support, but with most expressing shock and outrage.

A few quotable gems (translated):

"If she was yelling free Shanghai, that would be great! Free Shanghai! Free Shanghai!"
"Those who put on the show should be severely fined and not allowed to bring this kind of trash in for performances.”
"Call the relevant authorities! Be gone with her! What a bitch! Fuck!"
"Doesn’t surprise me that she’d do something like this."
"Very yellow, very violent!"
"I don’t think there is any issue, so what if she sang a few lines about Tibet, we don’t need to berate the woman to death. Is our government really that sensitive?"
"I don’t understand, why do Western stars give a shit about Tibet. Isn’t Tibet ours?! Mind your own business!”
"Wow, the nerve! Where did she get the courage to do this! Weirdo!”
“I like Bjork, it's ok for her to have a different point of view, but for her to do this is disrespectful to fans here, very selfish of her."

It's unlikely Bjork will be performing again in China any time soon, if ever. Bravo.

I say good on Bjork!

       Somebody I know claims that Bjork personally helped counsel them at a drug rehabilitation center. Im not sure if I believe them. Was Bjork ever a social worker or a counselor for programs like that?

Bjork Sympathising With Britney Spears?

It's been a long time since I posted anything here, so I thought to clear the cobwebs for a bit because I found a rather eye opening article that popped up just recently concerning Bjork.

Here's a link:  http://www.postchronicle.com/news/original/article_21285479.shtml

The jist of it is is that Bjork understands and sympathises with Britney's struggle to balance her musical career with the constant invasion of her privacy.

I find it interesting that she would say this. I wonder what she thinks of Britney Spears music in general?

Personally, I'm torn on this.

I myself have empathy regarding Britney's breakdown. But at the same time, I don't agree with her art because it's all manufactured. Bjork works hard on her music, writes her own lyrics, and generally oversees everything. Britney's music was conceived by pop producers and marketing gurus. She doesn't possess an identity of her own outside of bubblegum pop. I only know of one song that she wrote herself.

I think of this as Bjork only sympathising with the situation. Then again, so have other celebrities so it's surprising that Bjork would join such a chorus.

Even tho i've only heard the small snippet here - http://www.atributetojonimitchell.com/bjork.html - it's ABSOLUTELY stunning...

A very nice semi- rare chance to hear the clarity and reach and hypnotic quality of her voice...( with ACTUAL understanable words!!! - unlike the aural mess that was Medulla).

Hope i find it for download somewehere......or at least the CD for sale used somewhere.......

Sasquatch review

So, here we go:
Saturday - we got in the venue (after waiting at security for over an hour, and still managing to bring in tons of booze and party favors) just as Ozomatli was starting. I always love an Ozo show and this was no exception. Loved hearing newer stuff and danced my ass off.

Neko Case - boring as hell, singing was off key several times. Decent voice but nothing to get your panties in a bunch for.

Ghostland Observatory - Rad! Very retro, obviously don't take themselves too seriously. Loved the fuzzed out beats and the singer's got great stage presense.

Grizzly Bear - Need a new name, if you call your band Grizzly Bear you should fuckin' rawk. They did not.

Beasties - Great show, even though the sound sucked (actually the only set that sounded good all weekend was Bjork, imo, the sound techs at this fest are incompetent) Billed as an instrumental set, but wasn't, which was fine but I was a little disappointed, I wanted to hear funky shit like the In Sounds from Way Out all night. The encore was dope though, enough people left that boogie space up front was abundant.

Arcade Fire - Most hyped band on the planet. No soul, crap singing, two violins and not one violin solo? what is that about? Sound was so muddled I couldn't pick out any single instrument. Too bad we had to sit through this tirade of noise to get to the reason we came...

Bjork - I've been listening to Bjork for many years and this was my first show. I was hoping for more than she could possibly give, but she gave it all and then some. I've never seen a singer who sounds just as good live as in the studio. The stage show was sweet, and I loved being able to see the electronic wizards do their stuff. The horns were great and I loved the new arrangements of older songs. Bjork was just as adorable as always, dancing around and smiling ever so seductively. She really seemed to enjoy herself. This set was worth the trip from Eugene.

Sunday:
Tried to get in for Blackalicious, but again with lines and security it didn't happen.

Bad Brains - Loved the reggae, hated the punk. Sat down and got our drink on.

Polyphonic Spree - One of the other main draws for us, so it was a bummer to have their set cut short. Sasquatch's website had warned us of wind 2 days before we left Oregon. We were prepared, why weren't they?

Smoosh - Well, they're like 13 and sound like it, cool to see kids play, but it would've been cooler to see kids rock out. Novelty act at best.

Spoon - Only saw a couple songs, since they made the announcement that Spearhead was going to play at 9:00, they were okay, but really not much there.

Dandy Warhols - Pop rock, not too exciting, the most fun thing about their set was the impromptu jump rope blanket in the crowd.

Spearhead - Well, we wandered over to the Wookie stage and waited, and waited, and waited, missing interpol in the process. Finally left the stage before they even started so we could get a spot for the Beasties. Disappointing.

Beasties - Ummm, why do I want to see the same show 2 nights in a row? They played a few songs that they didn't on Sat. but mostly it was the same set. Fun, dancable, high energy and the crowd was diggin' it, but I was a little let down. I thought the Beasties were gonna do an instrumental set Sat. and something completely different on Sun. I was wrong.

Polyphonic Spree late night - This was unexpected and awesome. The spree are great in a smaller setting and put a huge smile on my face. A little tired after the long day, but a great way to end the weekend.

That's it for the music, here's the rest:

Sarah Silverman - WTF? I didn't see her at all, my girlfriend saw her for about 2 minutes and said she seemed hammered. Uh, if you're hosting a show, shouldn't you be on the stage? And especially during the wind induced break. It would've been nice to have some entertainment other that trying to kick a hacky sack on a hill in the wind.

$10 Coors Light - Ridiculous, is there some sort of shortage of shitty beer in Washington that I don't know about? That's the only valid reason I could see for beer being so expensive.

$4-6 water - see above. The Gorge needs to treat their PAYING CUSTOMERS with some respect.

No re-entry - Again, some respect is needed. We paid $120 to camp, let us go back and change, nap, eat, drink. 3 hours with no music on the mainstage and we couldn't even go back to our camp to wait it out. This is the only festival with camping that I've ever been to that doesn't allow you to go back to your temporary home during the day.

Communication - On the Gorge's website it states that vehicles won't be allowed to leave the campgrounds and come back. But, that's what our neighbors did both days. If we'd have known that we could leave and go swimming, we definitely would have taken advantage of it. Also, I went to get a $100 camping pass from ticketbastard like it said to do on the website and they weren't selling them anymore. Update the website with information like this. No Ice at the campgrounds was also stupid and the lady running the store even said she has asked for an ice trailer and the Gorge won't give her one. Are they trying to get us to buy more food? Every employee I talked to throughout the weekend said they were going to quit, and hate the way the place is run. Livenation needs to get its shit together.

All in all we had a fun time, but won't be going back to the Gorge until they start treating us with the respect that nearly all other festivals do. Bjork was the shit and the Beasties were fun. Wish we could've seen Blackalicious, the Slip, Helio Sequence, Interpol, Manu Chao, Spearhead, Mirah and Sarah Silverman. Seems like we paid a lot and didn't get too much in return. Oh well, in the end we got to see Bjork and that made the whole trip worthwhile.

keep groovin'

This was the closing song of her May 2nd NYC concert...it was INSANE!!! It sounds very punk rock, sugarcubesish....

The show was absolutely riveting. She has been quiet and off the scenes for some time now, but this album is not like the others, or so it seems. The songs she sang last night were beautiful love songs that were loud and not as "minimalistic" and "introverted" as the others.

She opened with "Earth Intruders", then "Venus as a Boy", then "Aurora". I absolutely loved this combination! The others were new songs, and "Pluto," "Army of Me," "The Anchor Song" among many others.

The brass gals from Iceland were amazing too. I was particularly impressed with their intonation and the fact that I couldn't figure out who was leading...

Anyone else??

Bjork Trickling Out Volta Teasers

Anyone fond of those Kid A blinking bear bits that MTV played back in the day might get a kick out of this. In anticipation of Volta's May 8 unveiling (May 7 overseas; both via One Little Indian/Atlantic), someone from camp Björk is posting little teaser videos and sound clips on the interweb that contain music and lyrics from the album, as confirmed by a Björk spökespjerson.
As reported on Seattle weekly The Stranger's Line Out music blog, a YouTube user called "VoltaVideos" posted a clip called "Earth Intruders"-- also the name of the first single from Volta-- a couple days back. It features some abstract, pulsating images, some music that might be construed as the "universal tribal beat" Björk recently discussed with Pitchfork, and the closing text, "we are the earth intruders."

Not long after that, web-trollers stumbled upon a mysterious MySpace profile belonging to one Gerome Voltaire of "itshardtofindabandname" from Iceland. The page includes four audio clips, each clocking in under 20 seconds: "Thereza Is He", "Denoisering", and the identical, percussion-heavy "O Is for All Ages" and "Oh It Is".

The MySpace also includes two videos similar to the "Earth Intruders" clip. One titled "V" depicts a jittery, out-of-focus image that bears striking resemblance to that colorful flaming Björk photo up there. It includes the words, "did I imagine it would be like this?", set against a lush, ambient track that's soon invaded by light percussion.

A second MySpace video, titled "o", features the same tribal drumming audio as the "O" and "Oh" clips and depicts the statement, "I have been filled with steam/ for months/ for years" atop what appears to be a close-up of another Björk photo.

"What I'm presenting here at the moment," writes the enigmatic Gerome on his MySpace, "is something I recorded at some listening session in Reykjavik with an Icelandic artist, which I then cut up and added noises and images to. I hope she doesn't mind." We'd wager that she probably doesn't.

Assorted videos in the same vein have since appeared on YouTube, including a clip titled "save?" that one might interpret as addressing the heated topic of abstinence: "should I save myself for later/ or generously give?"

So do Timbaland or any of Volta's other guest stars factor into any of these? Your guess is as good as mine. Either way, the rich, relatively organic-sounding (by Björk's standards) tidbits of sound here have us pretty durn stoked.

Catch Björk's stage spectacle, intruding on an Earth venue near you soon.

I think I've seen them all and not a single one disappointed me, they're so lovingly crafted and unique in their own ways.
I just can't choose which one I love most.....it could possibly be 'Hyperballad'.......or 'Big Time Sensuality' because I (like most people) would love to go mental on the back of a trailer through a city.......or 'All is full of love' - this one just speaks for itself, WOW.

Any of you have a particular favourite music video she's done?

Volta is the name of the album and the date is May 7th. The Press release reads thus:

"Musical innovator Björk releases her next studio album ‘Volta’ on May 7th 2007.

‘Volta’ is Björk's sixth studio album and follows the release of ‘Medúlla’ in 2004.

Featuring ten brand new and original tracks ‘Volta’ is entirely written and produced by Björk.

In the role of producer Björk has brought in various other musicians to work on her songs and ‘Volta’ features some of her most interesting collaborations so far with Antony Hegarty (Antony And The Johnsons) singing on two tracks, and Timbaland (Jay-Z, Missy Elliot etc) working with Björk on beats that she created for three further songs.

Other artists that feature on ‘Volta’ include electronic pioneer Mark Bell of LFO and two unique drummers – Chris Corsano (the improvisational drummer who has worked with Sonic Youth amongst others) and Brian Chippendale from Lightening Bolt.

Björk also brought in two acclaimed African artists for ‘Volta’ - Toumani Diabate, the Malian kora player and Konono No1 the experimental band from The Congo who won a BBC World Music Award in 2006. She has also put together her own 10 piece female brass section of Icelandic musicians who play on three further tracks. Meanwhile Chinese pipa expert Min Xiao-Fen plays on one song."

Pitchfork: Bjork Talks Volta for the Very First Time

On Friday, Björk opened her music box and revealed its latest treasure: Volta, the Icelandic powerhouse's forthcoming album, due out May 7 on One Little Indian/Atlantic.
The record was produced by Björk herself, and features a globe-trotting all-star cast of contributors, including Timbaland, Antony, Lightning Bolt's Brian Chippendale, percussionist Chris Corsano, African collective Konono N°1, kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté, Chinese pipa player Min Xiao-Fen, and a ten-piece Icelandic brass section.
Last week in New York City, Pitchfork's Brandon Stosuy sat down with Björk for her first interview about the new album. (Full disclosure: Stosuy is a friend of Matthew Barney, Björk's partner.) During their lengthy chat, Björk opened up about the politics and sonics of Volta, her relationships with her collaborators, and her plans for the future.

In the first part of a series that will continue over the course of the coming weeks, Björk talks about the rhythms of Volta: how they're different from the rhythms of her previous work, and how a trip to tsunami-stricken Indonesia inspired the life-force behind the beats.
Pitchfork: On your last album, Medulla, you focused on the human voice. This album has more of a percussive feel. Were you consciously trying to focus on percussion on this album?

Björk: I guess it was really different from how I usually work. Because at least with Homogenic, Vespertine, and Medulla, if there was a starting point, it was rhythms. I don't know why, maybe because it's the thing that I don't do. With Homogenic, I would start with a programmer, just to do distorted rock beats. And we did, I think, 100 just one bar things. And by the time I had written enough songs, I would just sit down, and then I could just sort of call it, 'okay, for the chorus of this song, like beat 73, and for the verse, number two' or whatever. And for Vespertine, I had just gotten my first laptop, and it was very much about the static universe of the internet, and all the beats clicking and everything whispered. So that would be the starting point. And obviously, Medulla was a vocal album.
But with this one, it was different because I knew more emotionally what I wanted. And because I'd done two or three projects in a row that were quite serious, maybe I just needed to get that out of my system or something. So all I wanted to do for this album was just to have fun and do something that was full-bodied and really up.

I actually did the whole album, and it wasn't until the last two or three months where the only jigsaw that hadn't been solved was the rhythms. We had done a lot of experiments with rhythms but I just threw them all away because it was like every time we did something really clever with drum programming beats, it was just too pretentious for this album, it just didn't stick.

For some reason, for me it was maybe a little bit nostalgic going back to 1992, where you had really simple 808 and 909 really lo-fi drum machines, not doing anything fancy but really basic, almost like rave stuff or trance stuff, and then really, really acoustic drums. So there are a couple of tracks on this album which are actually programs, with many programming hours spent, and you listen to it, and it sounds like kettle drums or something.

Pitchfork: Marching--both the rhythm of feet and the concept of marching itself--seems to play a big part in this record. What's the significance of marching?
Björk: I just wanted to get rhythmic again. Medulla was my way of pulling out of that, refusing to be categorized as 'Oh what rhythm is she going to do next?' Just feeling the pressure of all these young drum programmers or producers or whatever you call them contacting me, like, who was going to be the flavor of the month. It had become this kind of fashion statement, it just wasn't right.

I mean, I do love one-upmanship sometimes, like when you see kids breakdancing and who can do the best tricks. It's common, it's in our nature as animals, like the birds of paradise who've got the best feathers and that sort of stuff. But it's fun when it's impulsive and it's about fun. When it becomes clever, when it becomes more of a left-brain, who can mathematically out-do the other, it's not so fun anymore. And maybe I just sort of pulled out and did a whole vocal album.

But I definitely missed my rhythms. I mean, I love rhythms. I started an all-girl punk band when I was 14 and I was the drummer, not the singer. I'm very, very, very picky when it comes to rhythms. So it was fun to approach it from another angle on this one.
And I'd be lying if I didn't say it was some sort of reaction to the state of the world today. I mean, I went in January over a year ago to Indonesia, to the area where the tsunami hit the worst. Just seeing a village of 300,000 people and 180,000 died, and people were still there digging people out and the smell of corpses and bone. The tsunami kind of scraped houses away, you could still see the floor, and the people I was with found their mom's favorite dress kind of in the mud and it was just like, outrageous.

I mean, the human race, we are a tribe, let's face it, and let's stop all this religious bullshit. I think everybody, or at least a lot of my friends, are just so exhausted with this whole self-importance of religious people. Just drop it. We're all fucking animals, so let's just make some universal tribal beat. We're pagan. Let's just march.

I don't know if anyone else has heard this, but I was pretty surprised to hear that she is working with Timbaland:

http://www.aolmusicnewsblog.com/2006/06/12/bjork-teams-with-timbaland/

Bjork is collaborating with Timbaland for her new album, the follow-up to 2004's vocal-and-sample-based 'Medulla.' According to New York's Manhattan Center Studio, the Icelandic songstress and the hip-hop producer recently recorded there, with Jimmy Douglas (Jay Z's 'The Blueprint') acting as engineer.

Bjork, no stranger to left-field musical adventures, recently teamed with avant garde director/boyfriend Matthew Barney for the soundtrack to his film 'Drawing Restraint 9.' She is also releasing 'Surrounded,' a box set of her seven solo albums, on June 27.

Timbaland most recently offered his talents to Nelly Furtado, producing more than half of the tracks on her new album, 'Loose,' and appearing in the video for the first single, 'Promiscuous.'

has anyone seen the skateboard video chocolate? björk composed a crazy song "synchronicity"and spike jonze did the video for it. it is absolutely amazing. if you know any skaters ask them for that video just for that song...as a matter of fact, just buy the video. it's worth it, even if it is just for that one video.

also at the end there is a bonus scene where the boys in the video are describing their experience back stage with her at her show where she was jumping around going nuts with them.

like a dream!

so it has been oh so quiet in the björk world these days... it has just been announced that the sugarcubes will be performing on the 17th of november in iceland...iclandair is incredibly cool b/c they have a promotion where you can buy tickets for the concert in combination with the airfare.

~~~~~~~~from the www.bjork.com website~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Nearly 20 years ago The Sugarcubes put out on their own label Smekkleysa SM, their first single Birthday. This release was the start to the splendid career of The Sugarcubes, and impressive releases of Icelandic artists in Iceland and abroad alike. These first steps made by The Sugarcubes have made and everlasting impact and influence on the Icelandic export of music.
It is therefore with unbound joy we announce the 20th anniversary concert of Birthday and The Sugarcubes in Reykjavik on the 17th of November. The Sugarcubes will take to the stage for the first time in 14 years.
All profit from the concert, with the support of FL Group, goes back into Smekkleysa SM who will continue to work on a non-profit basis for the future betterment of Icelandic music and artists.
World domination or death! yes thank you!"
Please take note:
Regular ticket sale in Iceland will be announce very soon with the tickets going on sale through a local online site.
If you are interested to travel to Iceland to see the concert you will be able to buy a travel package from Icelandair, which will include airline ticket and the concert ticket. Hotel will be optional. All of Icelandair regional offices are putting up special pages for this reason. Please go to www.icelandair.net and choose your closest office of Icelandair.
lyric interpretation
ok folks, this one i have always struggled with...
does anyone have an interpretation for the lyrics for "harm of will" from vespertine?
what does it mean, what is she  expressing??
is will "strength" or a person??
i have pasted the lyrics below for your convenience.
:: harm of will
if there's a troubador washing
it is he
if there's a man about town
it is he
if there's one to be sought
it is he
if there are nine she's
they are bought for me
this way is
as is she
and he placed her unclothed
long (long) longlegged
a t o p   t h e   f a m i l y   t r e e
and if he has chosen the point
while she is under him
then leave her coily placed
crouched
sucking
him
for it is i with
h e r   o n   k n e e
i leave her
without pith
or feel
and leave her be : leave her be
for he controls
what there'll be
he makes
his face known to none
for if he is seen
then all will
and all will
know
know me
bjorkestra at gamh san francisco
Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra : An eighteen-piece big band interpretation of the music of Bjork...
Friday, August 4 @ Great American Music Hall, San Francisco
http://www.gamh.com/artist_pages/bjorkestra_080406.htm
Blending Bjork’s visionary techno pop with the harmonic and improvisational elements of modern jazz, composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist Travis Sullivan has created a truly unique ensemble that transcends genre and style.
Comprised of New York City’s finest jazz musicians, this eighteen-piece ensemble features full horn and rhythm sections as well as talented vocalist Becca Stevens, performing Sullivan’s arrangements that span Bjork’s entire catalogue.
If you have no idea what Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra is all about, you are not alone. Up until today, I had never heard of this odd musical experiment. Their website describes it as the music of Bjork Gudmundsdottir for large jazz ensemble. As a music fan who enjoys classic jazz and idolizes John Coltrane, I was definitely a bit curious to hear some samples of their tunes. They posted two MP3s that are free to download, including a SICK arrangement of "Army Of Me." They definitely appeal to both jazz fanatics as well as Bjork followers.
from TRIPWIRE:
"The ensemble is an eighteen-piece big band, comprised of some of the finest jazz musicians in New York City. The Bjorkestra has just announced their first ever West Coast tour, performing five nights in California.
Do yourself a favor and check this group out. There is no better way to chill out during the hot summer than by soaking up some great jazz... especially when it includes the music of Bjork."
also check out their calendar for dates all around the US: http://www.bjorkestra.com/live/
was going through my bjork concert videos last night and was surprised to hear how great she sounded on this tour.  It was actually the best concert i've ever been to, right up there with Kraftwerk at the Warfield.  It was back during the days where she was not as huge as she is today (still very popular though) and you could actually feel her close to you.  This concert moved me in a great way.  Still love her.  ONly wish I could meet her in person!!!
our favorite homies are up to it again...matmos has a new album and the title song is hot.
~~~~~taken from www.bjork.com~~~~~
Matmos' new album "The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of A Beast", features Björk on the first track, where she is heard for a few seconds, reciting the album's title.

You can graciously download an MP3 of the song, called "Roses and Teeth for Ludwig Wittgenstein", from their record label's site:

~~~~~~
here is a direct link to the good stuff.
björk in banda aceh, indonesia
Björk recently returned from the region of Banda Aceh in Indonesia to view some of UNICEF's work with children affected by the Asian tsunami in 2004. The trip was organised to follow up on the release of Army of Me, which was released as a benefit record for UNICEF.
Björk says that nothing could have prepared her for what she saw, as the the devestation was so great, that words escape her to describe it. A small travelogue is here on the UNICEF site.
http://www.unicef.org.uk/press/photogalleries/gallery.asp?gallery_id=29&nodeid=g29
Army of Me was based on the song of the same name released by Björk, but this time around in the various interpretation of other musicians and fans alike. The record has accumulated over 250.000 GBP, and continues to do so, as long as it is bought. So go for it if you have not already, everthing counts.
i know that missy is really fond of björk, as is madonna.  but i know that björk has said that she doesn't want to meet madonna (and that if she did, she would rather it be by pure coincidence).
Hello everyone! I'm a new member of this tribe and I just wanted to introduce myself. I am Melissa, a 26 year old gilry who lives in Brooklyn, NY. I run a Björk website which you can access here http://www.injectthebjork.cjb.net
I have been a fan of Björk's for 12 years now and still counting! She is a musical genous and I'm sure, if not all of us, many of us agree. I hope to be a long time member of this tribe so I guess the next thing to do is this...
Happy Holidays everyone!! Merry Christmas and I hope we all have a very happy, healthy and safe 2006!!
Until my next post...
AIFOL,
did you hear about this benefit concert?
Reykjavk sees tonight Björk play a sold out concert, which highlights the destruction of Icelandic nature. She is not alone at the concert as Sigur Rs, Damon Albarn, Ego, Mugison, mm, Hjlmar, Ghostigital, Rass, Ham, Magga Stna and many more take to the stage to protest. The concert is well sold out, and the mood is exciting in Reykjavk.
The Concert will be available next week, for webviewing, but until then we have an active photoblog from the concert site www.damnation.tv which should carry photos from the event.
In south Iceland, Thjorsarver, an area that is fit for the Unesco World Heritage list and is the most valuable nesting grounds for pink-footed geese, is in danger. Langisjor, a favorite lake with nature photographers, said to be the bluest lake on earth, is on the National Power Company's hit list.
In north and northwest Iceland, the river Skjalfandafljot and the Great Rivers of Skagafjordur, the most exciting rivers for rafting in Europe, are endangered.
Glacial water's silt feeds the ocean but once it is dammed it will only cause land erosion, mud-filled reservoirs and valleys, diverted rivers and air pollution, all for the sake of smelting a few thousand tonnes of aluminum.
Large sums of money are at stake, not money for the future but for a government seeking a financial boost, a high for the economy. We have seen manipulation, corruption, violation of democratic procedures, and even threats to those that dare oppose. We have seen propaganda, boycotts of scientific research and violations of labour laws by a contractor known for corruption. Aluminum companies line up for the cheap energy the government has put on sale.
Nature is under massive attack here in Iceland. However it is not too late to stop this. Please look for more information in the following links.
tonight our medulla makers are going to be performing a show together in brooklyn at warsaw.  it is going to be an amazing show!  my huz saw them perform several years ago.  i wasn't able to go to that show, and he always tells me that it was a jaw-dropping experience.  well tonight i'll be there, and i'll report back to you all tomorrow.  i'm sure björk won't be there (has she already set sail?), but your moderator will!
I bought the soundtrack from 'Drawing Restraint 9' and I'm incredibly intrigued - Particularly the track titled 'Storm' - There are times when Bjork hits a particular nerve with me and it draws me into something very primal, very sensory.
It's a fascinating group of songs.
Bjork on a boat
did anyone else see this?
http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/bjork%20plans%20round-the-world%20voyage
Iceland pop star BJORK is training to fulfil her ambition of sailing around the world.
The singer is currently taking a 10-week course to captain a 30 ton boat, and when completed she will embark on an epic journey with her boyfriend MATTHEW BARNEY and their three-year-old daughter ISADORA.
She says, "It has always been my ambition. I have homes all over the place at the moment - Iceland, England and France - but I'd love for my home to be a boat so that I can take it wherever I go.
"The course I'm taking tests whether I have the balls to do this. So I'm having to work hard and behave myself. My life's always changing - I'm constantly looking for new things. I'm never still. My theory is that life on a boat could be great."
bjork interview by matmos in nov issue of SOMA magazine
oooohhhhhh and also there's a new bjork interview in the november issue of SOMA magazine with gorgeous! new pics that i'll scan in for our photo section after the weekend if no one else gets to it first...........
here's a random bit of the interview quoted where she's talking about making the drawing restraint 9 soundtrack and working with matthew barney on the project but it's odd because it was like a conversation, you'll have to read it.....
"....what was most scary for me was the timeline. If I would've had three years to do this, I don't think I would have been that scared. Because I'm such and emotional person and I do things from an emotional point of view, maybe things wouldn't work from an intellectual point of view. I just had to jump in the deep end and just go to whatever mutual sources we had. You know, I think Matthew and I have a really different sense of timing. My attention span is like a retarded teenager, and Matthew likes things to be really, really long. That was a bit tricky."
